THE ARENA OPERA FESTIVAL
This festival is known by the name Arena Opera Festival and it is considered as one of the most important opera events in the world. In the next lines you will find some background information about this Summer Festival!
For example, did you know that the first performance, the one that has inaugurated the festival, dates back to 1913? It was the Aida of Giuseppe Verdi, chosen to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the artist.
«The Great Triumph of Aida, in Verona’s Roman Amphitheatre, to the acclaim of the delirious and cosmopolitan crowd».
These were the words on the Arena newspaper on the 12th of August 1913.
Yes, because in addition to being a big event, this show also marked a change from a scenographic point of view. With the premiere of Aida, the painted scenes typical of traditional theaters were abandoned and replaced with new three-dimensional elements.
Since 1913 the Arena Opera Festival has been staged almost without interruption every year. It was only during the two World Wars that the festival stopped for ten years.
So let’s find out together the schedule of the Opera Season 2023 and how to get to the Arena di Verona from lake Garda.
Like every year, you can choose between Aida, Carmen, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rigoletto, Nabucco and La Traviata. In addition, to these major works, two must-see appointments are also scheduled; Tosca and the evening with the famous ballet dancer Roberto Bolle.
As you probably know most of the shows start at 9pm and end around midnight, so if you are staying on Lake Garda you will need adequate transport. If you don’t have a car or don’t want to worry about parking, I can suggest two options.
