A little taste of Verona

The city of Verona was founded in the 1st century BC by the Romans and immediately became an important base of the Northern Italian empire. It gained independence during the Middle Ages while fighting with the Lombard League against the Holy Roman Empire. It was then under the rule of the Scaligeri that Verona became one of the most powerful cities in Northern Italy. Its autonomy lasted until the conquest by the Republic of Venice.

The name of the city represents its essence: “the Venetian city on the river”.

In fact, the name ‘Verona‘ comes from three ancient words:

  • Ve“, an Etruscan word used to indicate the Venetic peoples.
  • Ro“, from the Greek “reo,” meaning “to flow“, referring to the River Adige that runs through the city.
  • Na“, an Etruscan syllabic root indicating “an inhabited center“.

Verona is famous worldwide as the backdrop to the dramatic love story of Romeo and Juliet written by the talented William Shakespeare. However, Shakespeare never visited the city – he only knew it through the writings of Masuccio Salernitano, Luigi da Porto, and Matteo Bandello, which inspired him in the writing of his most famous work.

The beauty of this city has also earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In fact, since November 30, 2000, the city has been included in it with the designation “City of Verona“.
