The Dolomites: the most beautiful architectural masterpiece in the world
Defined by the architect Le Corbusier as “the most beautiful architectural masterpiece in the world“, the Dolomites extend over 140,000 hectares and are a natural and sporting paradise.
Their origins date back a staggering 250 million years! By analyzing the numerous layers that compose them, we can now gather extraordinary information about their past. These layers initially formed a massive coral reef within the Primordial Ocean, known as Tethys. Then, in the Miocene epoch, these algae, corals, and deposited shells emerged from the sea and began to form the mountains.
The name “Dolomites” comes from the geologist Déodat de Dolomieu, who discovered dolomite, a particular type of rock in this region. However, it’s not the only name by which they are known.
They are also called the “Pale Mountains” because the dolomitic rocks are pale, very light, and reflect the light that strikes them. At night, thanks to the moonlight, their light color is very visible. At dawn and dusk, instead, you can admire a spectacular natural phenomenon: the Enrosadira. The rocky walls of the mountains are tinged with a pink and reddish color, giving a unique spectacle.
Their incredible beauty has allowed them to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.
